What Is a Certified Legal Translation?

What Is a Certified Legal Translation?

A certified translation is a formally recognised translation that includes a signed statement confirming that the translation is accurate, complete and produced by a qualified professional. In the UK, this is the standard required by:

  • HM Courts & Tribunals Service
  • Solicitors and law firms
  • UKVI and immigration authorities
  • Regulators and government bodies

A certified translation includes the translated document, a signed certificate of accuracy, the translator’s credentials and the date of certification.

When Certified Translation Is Required

Certified translations are typically needed when foreign‑language documents form part of a legal, regulatory or official process.

Common scenarios include:

  • Filing evidence with UK courts
  • Submitting documents for immigration or visa applications
  • Providing certified translations for regulators or tribunals
  • Using contracts or corporate documents overseas
  • Cross‑border litigation or arbitration
  • Personal documents required for official use

Certified Translations for International Use

Different countries apply different rules to certified translations. We guide you through the specific requirements so your documents are accepted by courts, regulators and government bodies in the UK and overseas.

  • Certified translations with a signed certificate of accuracy (for use within the UK)
  • Notarised translations, where a notary public verifies the translator’s identity and signature (typically required for overseas authorities)
  • Apostilled translations, with an apostille issued by the FCDO for Hague Convention countries
  • Sworn translations, required in jurisdictions such as Spain, Italy, France and Germany

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my translation be accepted by UK courts?
Yes. Our certified translations are prepared to the standard required by UK courts, solicitors, barristers, UKVI and other official bodies. Each translation is issued with a signed certificate of accuracy, confirming that it is a true and complete translation of the original. If a particular court, solicitor or authority specifies additional wording or requirements, we can adapt the certification so it matches their instructions exactly.
Do you offer notarised or apostilled translations?
Yes. When documents need to be used overseas, a standard certified translation is sometimes not enough. In those cases, we can arrange notarised translations, where a notary public verifies the translator’s identity and signature, and apostilled translations, where the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) attaches an apostille for use in Hague Convention countries.
How long does a certified translation take?
The timeframe depends on the length and complexity of the document, but we always confirm this clearly before you proceed. Once we have seen the documents, we will give you a fixed delivery date and keep to it, so you can plan your filing or submission with confidence.
Can you work with scans or photos?
Yes. We regularly work from scanned copies and clear photos of documents. As long as the text is legible and nothing important is cut off or obscured, we can usually proceed without any issues. If the image quality is poor or parts of the document are unreadable, we will let you know and may ask for a better copy to avoid any risk of errors. You do not normally need to send originals for us to prepare the translation and certification.
How do you ensure confidentiality?
We treat all documents as confidential and handle them in line with professional standards for legal and official materials. Files are stored and transmitted securely, and only the team members involved in your project have access to them. We do not share your documents or personal information with third parties other than where strictly necessary for certification steps, such as a notary or the FCDO for an apostille, and even then, only for that specific purpose.
